Three Borders That Make Absolutely No Sense — And Why They Still Exist

Around the world, not all borders were drawn through logic or geography. Some emerged through wars, colonial treaties, population movements, and political mistakes. Today we look at three borders that confuse even experts — borders that make absolutely no sense in the modern era.

Bright glowing world map with three red highlighted locations — Baarle, Nakhchivan, and Point Roberts — and bold white headline "3 Borders That Make No Sense" with Geo Glance Info watermark.

1️⃣ Baarle: A Town Cut Into Pieces (Belgium & Netherlands)
Baarle on Map

Baarle is the most complicated border on Earth. Imagine a town where one house’s bedroom is in Belgium and the living room is in the Netherlands. That’s Baarle.

After medieval land deals between two dukes, the area became divided into 30+ enclaves. Instead of fixing the problem, both countries simply built their towns inside each other.

✔ Shops follow Dutch or Belgian laws depending on which side of the floor their door is located.
✔ Restaurants switch closing times depending on which law applies to their chairs.
✔ During COVID, Dutch restaurants had to close while the Belgian side stayed open — in the same building.

It makes no sense today, but locals say they have become used to living in two countries at once.

2️⃣ Nakhchivan: A Country Cut Off From Itself

Nakhchivan is part of Azerbaijan — but it is not connected to Azerbaijan.

To reach their own homeland, Nakhchivan citizens must travel through Armenia or Iran. This happened after the Soviet collapse, when borders were re-drawn without strategic thinking.

The region is a strategic puzzle for three countries:

🇦🇿 Azerbaijan wants a direct land corridor to Nakhchivan.
🇦🇲 Armenia fears that corridor could divide its territory.
🇹🇷 Turkey supports Azerbaijan and has a direct border only with Nakhchivan, not mainland Azerbaijan.

This single border oddity is one of the main reasons the South Caucasus remains tense and militarized.

3️⃣ Point Roberts: A Town Accidentally Stuck Below Canada (USA & Canada)
Point Robert in Map zoom in for more

Point Roberts exists because of a simple mistake.

The USA–Canada border on the west coast was decided as the 49th parallel north. But when the line reached the Pacific Ocean, nobody noticed that a small piece of land below the line was cut off from the United States.

✔ Point Roberts is American territory
✔ But the only road to it goes through Canada

Residents must cross an international border twice just to go to school or the hospital. During COVID, the border closed — leaving the town nearly isolated from the world.

Locals say it feels like living in the USA, but trapped behind Canadian walls.

Why Do These Borders Exist Today?

Most confusing borders remain because:

🔹 Changing them could trigger new conflicts
🔹 Treaties are legally difficult to modify
🔹 Locals have built lives around the borders
🔹 Governments avoid costly negotiations

So even if they make no sense, they continue — frozen in time.

People Also Ask

Why is Baarle so complicated?
Because medieval land trades created dozens of enclaves that were never corrected.

Why is Nakhchivan separated from Azerbaijan?
Soviet-era borders isolated it geographically, leading to modern geopolitical tension.

Why is Point Roberts part of the USA?
A mapping line at the 49th parallel accidentally placed the area below it in US territory.
